Audi on a budget

Spent an hour with a VW dealer last week. He said that he is now down to 9
techs, (in recent years, he was hiring 15) when at the beginning of 2000s he
was hiring 30 on two shifts.
Why ?
"They don't break anymore. No more window regulators or coil pack problems.
People just bring the car for the 6 month oil and tire change. That's it."
So, I am not afraid of recommending a newer VW, or an Audi, to a relative.
Maintenance is the key.

Outta be good, at least the 4th generation, 1999-2005, judging by 2 bugs
(mechanically equivalent), - a '99 2.0 @ 300K kms and a Y2K bug 1.8Turbo @
156K kms. High quality materials. The '99 had its 1st spark plugs replaced @
200K, front brake rotors @ 220K (mostly hwy driving), finally got tired and
put new shox @ 298K - old ones are dry. Only the rear rotors were somewhat
problematic - thumped @ 80K kms and alternator bearings @ about 100k kms.
Original clutch and fuel pump (carry a spare on long trips ;o).
No BTDT with H O N D A.
