agree w/ Mike here. get a corolla. =) if it has to be euro get a well kept
mk3 vr6 gti. i just passed one up for 4500 w/ 93k miles. clean, 1 owner car
with lots of love and some nice tasteful mods. oops.
if it has to be an audi go b5a4 1.8t. quattro manual. decent poke, not
terrible mpg's, easy to work on [2.7t is a $ pit]. i bought my 98 in 2005
and put 100k miles on it. it had it's share of preventative maintenance -
all the usual stuff - but overall was reliable, fun and a nice daily.
actually an a6 wagon 2.8 or 3.0 would be nice too. 2.7t, a8, etc will all be
$$$ to repair when they need it.
id go for a facelift / later model 00 or 01 - look for control arms, turbo,
timing belt, abs / airbag lights, clutch, brakes, suspension. ko4 and
springs and call it a day. car runs great w/ a ko4.
actually b6 would be my pick since it's the same as the b7 so you've got a
much newer feeling car [really 1 gen old]. b6/7 chassis is way way way
stiffer but theyre still a little higher it seems.
