Doyt,
It would not be out of the realm of possiblity that the timing pin is broken. However,
as I recall the spring loaded flywheel that comes with most of the cars that have AAN
engine has more of a tab that does not break as easily as the pin on the earlier
flywheels.
Did the mehcanic verify connectivity to the sensor from the Harness connector?
There are various codes and sensors related to this problem. The timing mark may be
being sensed, but not in the appropriate "window" that requires the hall sensor to be
"open". This could be a result of timing belt slop or hall sensor.
I have a spare DME if you think that will help trouble-shoot.

OK, my mechanic has an S6 in the shop and I'm interested in it....owner not happy, may
sell. Mechanic hasn't been able to fix the following problem and
would like to borrow a good working Motronic computer part #
4A0907551AA to make sure he isn't dealing with a bad computer. Car won't run.
PROBLEM: 95.5 S6 computer read-out indicates inability to read the timing mark on the
flywheel. ACTION taken so far: Replaced sensor that reads the timing mark.
RESULT: Computer continues to deny being able to read the timing mark.
Open to suggestions, ideas, sources.
