A4 transmission

Jeff, no, it had been getting very 'rattly' when in idle in first with the 
clutch disengaged, and would gently grind whenever I shifted into
first gear, which could only be done with gradually more difficulty.

I'm curious as to how you had first gear replaced.  Did it just fail entirely?
