VW Diesel Transplant?

Yes, I can tell you they are out there and pop up for sale time to time. I was in a driveway with an Audi 4000 turbo diesel, audi 4000 diesel, and 3 audi 5000 diesels all in front of me in Portland not more then a year ago!
Now, finding one local and the one your looking for condition wise? No way. I flew to Portland from SFO to look at the 4k diesel but never drove it home. It's definitely the type of find you need money in the bank for and some pad for repairs. If the injection pump is missing, walk away, they are proprietary to the 5000 turbo diesel and unobtanium. If you find one, hit up Performance Diesel up in Canada for a pump rebuild, he can pull good gains with a pump rebuild and will replace the rubber seals with viton to avoid having to use a lot of sulfur additive.
Now some tidbits on VW diesel engines just as an FYI:
Anything after 97 will be drive by wire, require a wiring harness, throttle pedal, and lotsa time wiring it up. More tuner friendly for power.
Anything before the drive by wire is all mechanical with minimal wiring and a mechanical injection pump. Not tuner friendly for huge power, but you can have some gains to make it fun.
The TDI and TDi varients will all have the 4 cylinder bolt pattern for the transmission as already stated. I have heard of folks using an adapter plate for mounting but know nothing of the specifics.
Oh, and everything diesel is big cash. Pump rebuilds, engine work, head work, all of it expect to be spending way more then a gasoline engine. Complete engines themselves are gold on the ground....
OP: I hope this helps, but I think your barking up the wrong (expensive) tree.
