Many years ago, our Saab 9-5 did the dead fuel pump trick... I was out of
town so I bit the bullet (700$ assembly OEM) and changed the pump myself
with just hand tools in a VW parking lot. Back at home, I opened that
assembly and found that the fuel pump only was a Walbro very generic part...
sold for less than 120$.
Now, it's common practice : http://www.newsemantics.com/saab/
Maybe you can pull that pump assembly and try to find a suitable cheaper
replacement ? You don't have much to loose...
