Axel shaft removal

Hi Al, a little late here but have some time,, so you may have gotten parts
already, but I would strongly encourage learning to replace the individual
boot if it hasn't been exposed that long. Whole driveshafts sold as new
-particularly FEQ I won't buy without stern warnings against the cost
appearance- fail often compared to good used C/V's. If your email address
reflects your region, I would imagine a quality OE/German (which will
sometimes have Chinese packaging) C/V joint isn't the easiest thing to
find.
As for your trouble, could be an easy lesson or a nightmare. The spindle
should come free of the hub easily enough, but I have had to use a punch
and mini-sledge many times, and particularly on mk3 vr6's have to regularly
take rotors off and use my 3 jaw puller to free them. The XZN/triple-square
inner bolts might be on there for life or spin right out, Definitely hammer
them in snug past the grime before you even think of turning them, and then
you might want a 3/8" drive 12mm 12 point to hammer around them if they
strip.. Worried yet!? :]
There are many writeups out there, it doesnt have to be VAG specific to
rebuild an axle boot kit or C/V joint..
If you did have to hit the bolt I wouldn't be worried so long as its only
out a couple few turns to initially break it free.
The oil pan thing can be remedied with about a car width of 4x4 wood, a
couple smaller pieces of 2x4 to prop it up where the fender is flat so you
dont actually touch the nice part of the fender, and a couple screws or
nails so the 4x4 doesn't roll down the pitch of the hood and presto instant
engine bridge. I'd prefer draping chains instead of chi-com ratchet straps,
but that would do as well. The rest can be adjusted with the careful use of
a floor jack.
Take care,
