Not all that familiar with this particular VW tranny, but a few things to consider. Most of the "new" auto trannies are "sealed units", that is they are filled once and then never need refilling again. While that is not really the case in real life, it means that no one usually checks the fluid level (need to have the tranny up to temp, and engine running to do it on the VW autos I have). So it is very possible that the tranny is not filled correctly, might be worth checking out. Might also be a shifter linkage adjustment issue, in that it might be that when in D, the cable is actually into the N area of the selector on the tranny. Again another quick fix.
As for Auto tranny guru's, CoolVWAir (I think that is his post name) on the tdiclub.com forums seems to be quite faliliar with the TDI autos; he might be able to help here...
