Brake Pad Wear Warning Light

Strange how the warning lights have changed over the years. I was looking in my owner's manual this morning to see whether my car has a
brake pad warning light and it doesn't appear to. Just a generic 'BRAKE' warning that seems to be more about system failure (or handbrake on)
than anything to do with the pads. I know I am getting near the end of the pad's life on my car and was curious about whether I will have any warning

or just go right to 'metal on metal'....

Strangely, my son's 2003 Jetta Wolfsburg DOES have a pad warning light, and it is the one indicated as 'Canadian' in my  car's owner's
manual....

There is a break in the wire farther upstream of that.
