Not that I want to be a downer, but aren't these alternators water-cooled ?
If so, it is a much more involving job to replace the unit, so maybe the
in-situ diode repair would make sense...

The diodes are a part of the alternator itself, generally positioned at the
back of the case. They are what I suspect is bad, so that would require the
whole alternator to be replaced.
