Good then, I was sure the A8 had such an alternator, but now that I’ve
checked this on ETKA, I can only find the VW Phaeton V8.

Much easier

According to audipages, when you go to replace the oil cooler, you have to
remove the alternator and there doesn't seem to be any coolant connection.
I believe there may be a duct going from the air intake to a boot on the
back of the alternator, though.

Not that I want to be a downer, but aren't these alternators water-cooled ?
If so, it is a much more involving job to replace the unit, so maybe the
in-situ diode repair would make sense...

The diodes are a part of the alternator itself, generally positioned at the
back of the case. They are what I suspect is bad, so that would require the
whole alternator to be replaced.
