Sealing tail lights - water leak

I don't think the 5000 (type 44) has a rubber bumper like you have on the
4000.

Even if it did, I don't think that would cause water to accumulate inside
the sheet metal portion of  the trunklid itself.  That's what mine is doing,
which implies the plastic housing is not cracked ... the plastic isn't
filling with water.  The sheet metal part has water in it such that when I
lift the lid the water empties of of the metal into the trunk, and overflows
into the trunk when the lid is closed.

I'll give the 3m 08611 butyl material a try ... sounds like I've been using
the wrong stuff.  I see it's available locally at NAPA for about $20.
