I think my old Fiat 124 came with 165/80-13 tires. Eventually got to
215/60-13 Pirelli CN36's. With them, and my magnificently modified
suspension, handling was fantastic. The mileage may have dropped very
slightly, but since I was already getting better mileage than the stock
28/36 progressive two barrel Weber with my dual dual-40mm Weber's and
tubular header, who cared?

She does make a valid point, though. Those old Geo Metros with go kart
tires on them got fantastic mileage, probably thanks in part to the lower
rolling resistance of the narrow tire. Winter tires should be narrower,
too, as they cut through the snow easier.
