I'll second that, seen it quite a few times. Probably the heater core was
weak anyhow (20+ years old and all) and when the pressure got too high from
the running hot issue, it let go. Now, once you get the new heater core in,
you will also need to troubleshoot why the temp started climbing. You
didn't mention if you were in traffic or on the highway when it got hot.

The empty coolant reservior does not account for why it overheated. That is
a byproduct of the heater core going bad, dumping all the coolant into the
heater box. You will also notice wet floors as well.
