No. In my opinion a "bad clutch" will not connect the engine to the rest of
the drivetrain. If you can start it in gear, it's connected. In fact, with
at least 3 of my cars, starting the car in gear was the only saving grace
when the clutch hydraulics failed. I could come to a stop, kill the engine,
engage 1st gear, start the engine in gear, and shift without the clutch by
matching gears. In each case, the clutch slave was bad, however the clutch
master also failed shortly thereafter in all but one.

Someone interested in buying the 4kq asked if the car could be started in
gear, which it could before the battery died. The buyer said that would mean
the clutch is bad. Does this sound accurate?
