I'm not an expert, but it almost sounds like the clutch isn't fully
disengaging AND the synchro is worn. Therefore the input shaft is still
turning but the synchro can't match the speed, and that makes first
difficult to engage, but once the output shaft is turning as well, it gets
easier.
I have a similar issue in my mk4 jetta vr6 and it makes first only
selectable when I'm going slow (I like it that way though). Of course, a
dieselgeek shift mechanism with a b&m sts doesn't help lol.
