hours labor. Just R&R'ing the transmission accounts for more than half
that. Swapping the console, running shift cables, installing the third
pedal, and 200 unforeseen tiny problems easily take up the rest.

This is exactly what I was thinking. In fact, I'm thinking an older Audi
auto to manual swap is 30+ hrs for your average DIYer, much less an A8. I'd
plan on at least 40 my first time in, and I do this sort of stuff regularly.
Anyhow, just all depends on how badly you want a manual in the car. Also,
if you car is a 32 valve, you have to find a 32 valve flywheel (Audi V8
Quattro, S6 plus) as it has 10 bolts, not the 8 as on nearly every other
Audi engine.
