Valeo alternator quality

Most bearings bought off the shelf won't last too long in an alternator.
This is because of the high Rpm's encountered. Cheap rebuilds will use cheap
bearings that won't last long. Good rebuilds last the distance.

My '88 Jettahas a Valeo alternator on it, and so does my son's '91 Golf. The
front bearing never lasts more than 15KMiles. (The V-belt is not
overtightened!)

The reason is probably a combination of a smallish bearing and a V-belt
pulley that is attached quite a distance away from the front bearing.
The Bosch 90A alternator that I saved from my Fox when I junked it at
160KMiles, is a bolt-in replacement, and still does not have any play in the
bearing.?
Now I am curious how long the Valeo alternator on my '03 V6 Passat is going
to last?

Peter
