Paul Timmerman worked for NASA out in California, in jet propulsion, back
in the late 90's, and as far as I know should receive credit (or take the
blame) for the Schrappnel Knobben. I think his interest later moved from
Audi's to the Subaru WRX.

Below is something he published to the Internet back in January, 1997, and
I kept a copy, and later bought one of his kits for my 87 5ktq that summer.
The results made me smile and didn't explode my engine.

read about your little group. Over there I am know as the Schrappnel
Knobben Meister. I have been offering low cost ignition computer and
wastegate control modifications for Audi Quattro Turbos. These cars use the
bosch cis-lambda system, which is really a mechanical system more so than
an electronic one, so kill me.:-) I have some fun projects going on with my
car, getting it ready for the Virginia City Hillclimb. I am working on a
total loss water injection and intercooler cooling system. I run about 18
psig of boost and lots of ignition advance. These have been achieve by
various hacks into the existing systems. Something on the order of 250-300
HP out of a 2.15 liter inline five cylinder motor, with no major changes in
hardware. Its almost stock, except for all my own home brew stuff I have
added on. Lots of fun and and an extra 100-150+ HP with just the sweat of
my brow. My expertise is mostly in the area of chemical engineering and
batteries, with lots of computation stuff. I have fitted a six channel
thermocouple measuring and control system to my car. I can read all the
goings on with my turbo system, exhaust, water, oil, etc. Control functions
are going toward the active cooling and water injection systems.
I have not htmlized any of my car stuff or my personal stuff, so your out
of luck there, at least till I get some stuff scanned and get a bit more
vanity ;-) I am very interested in developing a dynamic knock sensor addon
for my car. Can't get anywhere with Motorolla, and don't have a mule to
test for pinging on. maybe the diy-efi group can be a help.
