Can 20 year compressor overheat the 20V?

That's what I think. Marginal cooling, so any supplemental load will
overheat the system.
Air conditioning can't add that much heat under the hood as to have an
engine overheat. A/C is a simple system : the cooling inside the car roughly
equals the heat generated outside in the engine bay. So if a lot of heat is
produced outside, there must be a freezing cold blast inside the car...
You probably think of a bad compressor that adds too much drag on the
engine, causing it to overheat. I can't see how that could happen. A bad
compressor would destroy itself in a matter of minutes if it was dragging
that much.
Your problem lies elsewhere.
Did you removed the auxiliary radiator ? If so, did you connect the two
hoses together instead of blocking them ?
Also, if there is one on your car, maybe you have a problem with the hot
water valve that is shutting the wrong hose when A/C is on.
Maybe it's the A/C automatic head unit that is at fault.
Last thing, the gauge. Are you sure the car really overheats ? Or is it only
an electrical charge on the temperature gauge/sender that makes it read
higher. Good to know before replacing expensive parts...
Good luck,
Louis-Alain

Maybe the radiator is tired, maybe a flush of the cooling system may help.

Yes, turning the AC on turns on the fan right away.
