Diesels are smog checked in CA, Steve.  At least the relatively new 
ones.  I have an '03 and an '04 TDi, and we get 43-52, mixed driving, 
depending on the mix.  Love 'em.  Ours are both 5 speeds.  I've done a 
couple of auto tranny replacements on Mk 4 TDis, and sent a couple more 
to the bone yard.  i would NEVER buy a G/J/NB with an auto tranny, TDi 
or gas, and I discourage my customers from doing so.
