"headliner is starting to fall down"

Annie's Fabric Shop is your friend. I replaced the headliner a number of
years ago in my sunroof free '87 sedan, took a lazy afternoon. Except that I
understand that a sunroof increases the difficulty, it should be easier on
an Avant. A search should find a write up, if not PM me. I have watched my
local upholstery shop do it, they just spray new glue over the old. They
admit that a coat of a shellac sealer, such as Kilz might help. But as they
put it "help what"?

As to the peeling clear coat, I understand that there is no satisfactory
touch up.The only solution is sand and repaint (if the paint has been exposed
to atmosphere for any period of time, it has oxidized. Shooting some new
clear is not a good solution). I just had the roof on my old Volvo 850 wagon
sanded and painted (black which was on hand, so no paint cost) The cost
was $300. MAACO quoted the same, but I decided to go with an independent
shop.
