A4 Avant Help

1998 A4 v-6 with 184,000 on the clock.

Yesterday my daughter borrowed the car and reported that the idle was
"hunting" while stopped at a light. At one point it stalled...something it
never has done.

Today we drove about 20 miles to a friend's house. When we got in about two
hours later it would not start. I depressed accelerator pedal while
cranking and it finally caught.

While on the interstate I noticed it was stumbling, especially if I tried
to accelerate. The stumbling got worse. After turning off the highway I had
to stop at a light. The car died...and will not restart. It will catch and
run smoothly for a few seconds than start to load up and ultimately shudder
to a stop.
