When my A4 behaved similarly, it was the water temp sensor. But it
could be any of a number of sensors. It really helps to know what
codes are being thrown. Unlike the 200 series, where a paper clip
could be used to trigger the codes, you need a OBD-II reader. They
aren't that expensive. I bought one for about $50 from my local
auto parts store, an older version of cheapest Actron.
