Final Question on A4 Avant Help

I had a problem with my ECT sensor - caused stumbling around 2,500 rpm, fluky activity with the temp gauge and
intermittent no-start where I had to hold the pedal down halfway to get it to start. The only time the engine light came on was when
I had to resort to holding the pedal down to start the car. Engine light would stay on and rpm's would not drop below 1,000 at
idle (but if I shut the car down then restarted, then all was fine).

Well, it might not turn on if the computer doesn't see one failed item. High altitude combined with some lazy sensors and maybe some oxygenated fuel.... Or a partially plugged cat, etc. A generic code reader isn't the best choice here. Put that money towards a VAG-COM.

The it'll just be a matter of checking the wiring and likely replacing the sensor(s). Depending on car history, there is likely more than one "lazy" sensor in the system, making it much more susceptible to poor running conditions.
