Ed,
As mentioned, very common for the electromagnet to go bad. You can either
try to find a good used one, have it rebuilt, or replace the whole
compressor. Or, maybe check with the dealer and see if the clutch is
available through them.
When I enter the #'s for the clutch for either 4 or 6 cyl A4 into Wordpac,
It redirects me to the whole compressor.
