Had the same issue with my '96 Jetta, which were notorious for losing the door rub strips. Double-sided tape was the answer.

I went back to the car wash and they were able to find the molding, in tact, yay! So now, I'm wondering how to get it back on (and keep it on). While the underside of the molding is clean, the car has a bunch of gunk stuck where the molding goes. I guess it was some kind of adhesive. Do I try to remove it? Its hard as a rock. Also what's the best product to use to reattach?
