fuel pump replacement

End of story (for the list archives):

I've managed to get a Pierburg 7.21651.60 (which is currently not
manufactured anymore, and replaced by .70). It had an "adapter" (as seen
in shop pictures), but is not the same as Audi's spring pin stuff. You can
see that difference at SJM site. It doesn't need damper. Originally it
was intended for older mounting with 3 rubber feet. However, it nicely
fits the newer basket. Just get some copper washers and the cap nut.
Order cap nut at your dealer, as it is not available in usual hardware
stores.

I didn't like few things:

1. The green screen at the bottom: I took the green net off, leaving only it's
plastic frame. That frame gets very near the original screen, and some
time later I may have holes there. But without the screen at all the
pump will not fit tightly in the basket.

2. The O-ring around the pump adapter - never really understood why it
is there. With Pierburg's adapter it is even more questionable,
because the positioning tang is connected to the round groove, so the
ring protrudes a bit at that point.

Anyway, no more buzzing! It feels like a different car :)
