They all look the same, they are physically the same, but the thermal spring
in there is calibrated for each engine.
A wrong one won't prevent an engine to run, since this device is there to
rise the idle speed when cold, then close the air when the engine is hot.
But a rough idle period should be expected. I personaly would try a few
known good ones if cheap and easy to replace.

You may want to check both part numbers on the old unit (Bosch will be "0
280 XXX XXX" and VAG will be like "022 906 045a") and try the usual
suspects.

If I chose the good one in ETKA, then it is still available from here :

I have a bad auxiliary air regulator on my 81 VW Vanagon, 2.0 air cooled. VW
says that it is no longer available and I can't find an on-line source. This
is a 2-wire regulator and I've been told that any 2-wire unit will work.
Does anyone know of other VW or Audi models that use a 2-wire auxiliary air
regulator so that I can substitute.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
