It is somewhat amazing to me that oil loss is a problem for so many,
but manufacturers seem to have gone away from emphasizing proper
break-in of engines. And there is a belief that the newer, closer
tolerance engines do not need or benefit from proper, graded break-in.
Bull! The rings are different and better, but there is still benefit.
My '07 GTI, the only new car I've ever bought for myself, was broken
in the old fashioned way. Never burned a drop of oil after going
through 3/4 of a quart in the first 1800 miles, after which point I
changed the oil and moved on to normal driving for the 34,00 miles
more that I had it. Do it and reap the benefits.
