Valve lifters - again

Radek,
Yes, you can take them apart. BTDT with plenty, they are generally gummed
up and some good brake parts cleaner will clean them nicely. There are five
parts IIRC. The bucket, the small insert part in the bottom, and then a
keeper, spring, and small ball valve. Clean everything and reassemble.
To take them apart, put it the way it goes in the engine, and hit it HARD
on a piece of wood. The bottom insert piece will come out. I wrap it in a
rag to do this, make sure you use one that can go in the trash after, as it
will have holes in it from hitting (remember the HARD comment?).
However, having done this on my personal cars several times, I'd say I've
still had three or four that did not quiet (out of probably fifty I've
done). So in the end it's not worth the effort for me. I just buy new ones
for a V8 these days. about $8 each, well worth it for my time of removing
the cam.
