Valve lifters - again

I took the softest lifter and tried to take it apart following Tony's
instructions, but it didn't work. I must have misunderstood the
instructions.  Here's what I did:
- put a wooden board on the floor;
- took the lifter in my hand, wrapped in a rag, and hit it against the board
as hard as I could.
I made quite a few ring marks in the board, but the lifter wouldn't come
apart.
Should I have used a hammer?

Radek.
