They don't.  My '99 A4 LED driver info display (the big red square)
fades in the heat, so much so that above 70F it disappears altogether.
With the cooler weather, the info display is coming back. The LED
odometer looks great, but Audi save a few pfennigs on the  driver
info display.

There's a web page on how to solder in a new LED board, but you
need a good iron and fine motor skills (there's a lot of small
contacts). There are companies out there that'll fix it for you.
