If the excessive cranking happens after sitting overnight, and during
the day after sitting for 5-6 hours, then the pressure in the fuel line
has dropped, and the fuel pump needs time to re-fill the fuel line.

Causes:
a) one or more leaky injector seals
b) a failed check valve at or in the gas tank
c) a small leak from a corroded fuel line, usually found
under a clamp underneath the car
d) all of the above :)
