I hear you. My '99 A4 was the last straw.  Every year I spent
$1500 or more fixing things, figuring it wouldn't need any
more work. But it always needed something to get past state
safety inspections. Sigh.

So I bought an '02 VW Beetle TDI. I hope the VW is easier on
the wallet than its cousin Audi.  And my saving will go into
my '56 Austin-Healey 100. :)
