Last year I attended a diesel emissions seminar put on by Pierburg.  They
brought up MAF cleaning.   They only recommend it as a temporary test.  Hot
wire MAFs become thin and damaged over time with particles coming in
contact with the wire.  Apparently cleaning them is only at best a short
term solution. 
 
 
Thanks to all of you who responded, and Jason for clarifying that cleaning 
the MAF is not likely to be a long term solution.  I replaced the MAFand all 
is well.  As usual, simple lesson learned the hard way.
