Very nice explanation Pat. Although technically AC compressors can pump a
small amount of liquid mixed in with the refrigerant vapor. It's just that
in well designed and properly charged systems, they don't. Too much liquid
at once, or too many droplets of liquid over time will cause problems,
usually broken reed valves, but sometimes other things.

Bottom line: Use a vacuum pump. Properly evacuating an ac system before
charging improve performance, reduces the chance of failure and is a good
first test for leak tightness of the system. If you can't pull a good
vacuum, you need to stop and find out why, otherwise you'll just waste your
refrigerant, and be right back at it looking for the leak.
