How necessary is timing belt cover?

As metnioned, not at all a good idea to remove only the top cover. However,
if you want to run sans covers, remove them all. That way, if something
gets kicked up, it will simply bounce off and you can continue down the
road. Otherwise, with teh bottom cover on, something can vall in and get
trapped, thereby causing a good chance of premature belt failure.

I've run for years without covers on several cars. But, when I remove one,
I remove them all.
