V8 troubles

Hi all:

I thought I was in the clear just having made a big investment in my car but things have taken a turn for the worse. I drove it to work and back yesterday and it was fine except for an occasional flicker of the brake light in the dash. 

The shop that recently worked on the car said I would need back brakes soon. I was going to bring it in next week. When I backed out of my garage today it seemed to be running rough. The brake light KEPT flashing on the dash. I drove it in a circle I'm front of my house and pulled it back in the garage. I didn't seem like it would make it anywhere. I don't know what back brakes and the engine have in common but I really thought the car was going to stall this morning. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. I sure hope there's a connection because otherwise I have two problems.
