Backflushing the screen seems like a good idea if possible.
Especially if the motor is so gunked it fouls the replacement screen too.
Re a static flush- One method I heard of is filling the engine completely(to
the valve cover cap) with strait diesel. Probably 4-5 gallons on the
average engine. Let it sit for a while then drain. Hopefully your crank
and cam seals are up to the task..
Personally, I skip the expensive flushes and run 50/50 diesel and motor oil
just to the full mark on the dipstick, let idle for 5-10 minutes- no load.
Drain and repeat as necessary.
This technique would probably clog a VAG screen too, but at least the engine
will be clean.
And if pan removal is necessary, I second the brake cleaner. The good stuff
will wash a lot of crud away and it's just so darn satisfying watching all
the junk wash away and expose clean metal.

I like to spray brake cleaner in while the pan is open, but that's just
for fun. It seems to me the key is come up with a way to backflush the
oil pickup screen.
