I think the direct injection problem had to do with carbon build up on the valves if I remember correctly.

The sludging was mainly an issue in the 2002 - 2004 timeframe, for the 1.8T 
engines. But I think someone just mentioned another
issue with the 2.0T engines. Forget what it was, it's in the archives, or 
someone will mention it.... Had to do with the direct-injection
function....
