Occasional Smoking

Whip the plugs out and see what colour the piston tops are. If you have a
shiny one and the rest are black then it is being steam washed via laky head
gasket. I agree with L-A that white "smoke" is usually a sign of water. If
you have a shiny piston top then it is definitely water. The reason I
suggested breather system was the initially wild idle then stumbling.
My WR head gasket went earlier this year. Perfect compression. Perfect idle,
no loss of power but very slight loss of coolant, very hard (pressurised)
top hose and shiny piston top on #1. When dismantled very obvious damaged
gasket.

White smoke is coolant usually. Does the coolant in the reservoir show some
bubbling when engine is running or shortly after ?

My 90 90Q seems to know it's approaching 250k km by acting her age.

For a few weeks the idle went wild, she belched (white) smoke erratically,
she'd threaten to stall (but never did) on deceleration.

Having gained my full attention, I did a compression test, followed by a
leak down test; Head was rebuilt @ 125k, lower block is all original. I have
a rebuild able 3B avalable for building a sleeper car.

         CYL COM WET DRY LOSS%

Cleaned the ISV, replaced the O2 sensor, cleaned air filter, replaced the
rotor and cap and put it all back together. For the past 3 days she's been
purring...except

The plugs are covered with a black dry soot and it smells of hydrocarbons.
On occasion, if I watch in the mirror, I can cover the car behind in white
smoke (like James Bond) If I measured mileage it appears to be down. Oil
consumption is a little elevated.

She's giving me hints but I can't talk to her (blink test says she's fine).

Suggestions?
