Hi Nick,
I think this self study guide may help.
SSP 922903
http://www.vaglinks.com/vaglinks_com/docs/ssp/vwusa.com_ssp_922903_2.0l_4v_tfsi_engine.pdf
It describes some of the operation of the 2.0L engine in the 2009+ A4.
One of the things that it says is that the engine is an evolution of an
earlier VW/Audi engine, and this is the study guide for that earlier engine.
SSP 824803
http://www.vaglinks.com/vaglinks_com/docs/ssp/VWUSA.COM_SSP_824803_2.0L_TSI_Turbo_Motor.pdf
Between these two study guides you should be able to learn a lot about how
the whole thing works.
