S6 hood release cable?

Well - the dreaded broken hood release cable has blessed me with it's presence.
The patient is a 95 S6. How does one get the hood up to access the cable to R&R it?
The strange part of it is, the cable didn't snap or appear to break. When I went to open the hood, the lever was limp with no action on the cable at all. The last it was used, it worked fine with no signs of additional tension or hints of issues.
