I live on the lower half of California and have been doing my own maintenance forever. But I can't do it all and want to find a good mechanic to finish the rebuild on my 93 S4 engine (2.2l I5 turbo.)  I had a trusted mechanic rebuild the engine about 6 years ago but either it lost compression, never had compression or something failed since the rebuild. It's been sitting 4 years, motivation has been lacking since I don't know where to take it anymore, my trusted mechanic retired and moved to Montana.

I suspect the rings, either broken or insufficient. No ticking noise, probably not broken. When I bought the ring set it came in a 6 pack, so I'm thinking they weren't turbo ready, plus I only paid $30-50 for the set, not $25 per piston normally asked.

Please reply with advice/admonition and the name of a trusted mechanic.
