2001 A6 4.2

It looks like my 2000 A6 2.7T may need some expensive engine work.  I ran
across a super clean 2001 at a reasonable price but it has a 4.2 V8.  My
mechanic says they are OK but maintenance is kind of a pain because the
engine compartment is so crowded.  I know some of you out there own these.
Is there anything I should be aware of before buying one of these?  How
about fuel economy and maintenance costs?  I do most of my own mechanical
work.  I would check the timing belt first thing if I can't find
maintenance records.
