I can attest to that.  Had my timing belt break in my 84 years ago.  just 
pushed it off the road, changed the belt later and never had a problem.  I 
think the 85 and later are interference (had an 85 later).  They also feel 
way more than 10hp faster to me and look better to my eyes.

Well, it's not even close to being an interference engine, so breakage
would only result in stranding.  And if it "looks good" it should be.
The rubber part is what I would worry about, and can be examined
annually if one is worried about it.
