The 2.2 (and 2.3) n/a engines aren't  interference either.

The later cars had lower gear ratios adding up to  20% in "perceived" hp.

My '82 had an extraordinary 5th gear overdrive (I think it was one  year 
only) of about .50 to 1. It was necessary to downshift to overtake at  highway 
speeds. Great highway mileage.
