‎If the mechanic who did the safety removed a tire to check the brake pads, it is possible that they forgot to torque up the wheel bolts when the car was off the lift. You may have been singing "you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel" :-)

Couldn't all this just be a tire going out of round without any other failure? I wonder if the sound could just be the side wall or tread rubbing the inner fender well or strut tower intermittenly. 
Hopefully that is it since the tire is ruined anyway. I would use the widow maker to lift the car to spin the wheel and listen. That can be done without getting underneath of it.
