I've tried that test with all manner of flammable, from brake cleaner to 
propane, and it never works well.

You're better off with a smoke machine, which any shop now has in order 
to diagnose emissions systems (mostly fuel supply system venting/sealing 
and EGR stuff).  Easy to do.  Ignore the little leaks at things like 
tired throttle flap axles and look for big leaks coming out of hoses and 
part to part connections.

It might also help to remove the big black rubber thing that goes from 
the fuel metering thing to the throttle body and check it out for cracks.
